Frequently asked questions.

Where do you get your apples?

We work with 14 different orchards throughout Vermont and New York to source the 13 million pounds of apples we bring in and press each year. Our commitment to building our business in collaboration with regional apple growers has never wavered.

Do you ever use concentrate to make your cider?

We do not use concentrate to make Citizen Cider products. We press 24,000 gallons of apple cider a week at our pressing facility on Flynn Ave. in Burlington, VT.

Why does the Baker’s Dozen have almond extract and also say it is nut free?

We use an “almond” extract that is made from the pits of peaches and apricots which taste remarkably like almond! Despite the name this extract is completely nut free.

Are your ciders pasteurized?

Yes! All of our ciders are pasteurized.

Why did you start making beer?

In 2022 we began co-packing for some local companies in Vermont. Co-packing is when a company with larger equipment and/or a larger facility makes and packages a product for a smaller company. It is a great way to support smaller businesses in being able to have control over the quality of their product despite limitations in their own facilities. One of those companies is a brewery so we brought in the needed equipment to brew beer. Other than the brewhouse we have all the same equipment as a craft brewery.

As a beverage producer we pride ourselves on making things that our employees like to drink. Many members of our team prefer to drink light beer so in fall of 2022, at one of our monthly meetings, we agreed to let the production team get creative and develop a light beer that they loved.

Now that you are making beer are all your ciders still gluten free?

To manage gluten cross contamination between products such as beer and cider we follow best practice production guidelines to ensure the gluten-free nature of our cider products. Beer, which contains gluten, is made in dedicated tanks. We routinely test equipment, that is to be used for cider, for gluten contamination. And we send samples for 3rd party testing to verify the gluten levels in our products are within FDA guidelines for “gluten-free products”. Why can’t I find your sparkling cider or beer brands on the Citizen Cider website?
