September has arrived and with it comes chillier mornings, changing leaves, and the kick-off to one of Vermont’s time-honoured seasons: Apple Picking Season!
As we say goodbye to the warm summer months, we welcome all the festivities that come along with this season. Apple pie recipes are whipped out from the recipe box, and flannel clad crowds flood to the orchards. On top of apple picking, some orchards offer other seasonal delights such as hayrides, corn mazes, cider donuts, and pumpkins. But apple picking provides more than just fall fun, most importantly, picking season is a way to support local farmers!
For everyone here at CITIZEN CIDER, apple picking season is particularly special. CITIZEN CIDER believes that making craft cider means doing things the hard way. Working only with whole fruit and never from concentrate. CITIZEN CIDER sources apples locally and directly from growers in the Northeast. They hand-pick every apple in our ciders.
These partnerships are crucial to making our business what it is, and the apple picking season gives us the opportunity to strengthen those relationships. We get the opportunity to better understand where our apples are coming from, and experiment with new varieties. In addition to traditional apples such as McIntosh or Empire, farmers expand their varieties and grow lesser-known apples such as the Northern Spy variety or Rhode Island Greening. Pickers can also try different apple varieties as they are ready at the orchards.
Every year we encourage the Good Citizens to Take Time to Pick during the months of September and October as a way of supporting the farming community. Many of our partnering orchards offer apple picking and fall festivities, so we checked in to see when they are welcoming you to their fields. We hope you stop by throughout the season and see where some of your favorite ciders come from!
